Four local women will be honored by the Hopkinsville Human Relations Commission (HRC) for their contributions to the community as part of the city’s observance of Women’s History Month in March.
The celebration is part of the nationwide focus on women in history. This is the second year that the HRC has participated. The theme of the national observance is “Our history is our strength.”
Last  year, the commission awarded the Fannie Bronson Postell Woman of the year award to the Modernettes Civic Club. This year, the commission will expand the awards program to cite three women for their work in specific areas. The criteria include longtime service to the community, overcoming challenges and contributions to the city’s youth.
The community award will be  named for Sherry Jeffers, Hopkinsville’s first female mayor. The award for overcoming challenges will be named for Rachel Davis Hopkins who, though visually impaired, served hundreds of women as a UK extension agent. A third award will honor Jennie Knight Baker, founder of the Aaron McNeil House.
The Postell award will recognize a woman who has helped advance civil and/or human rights in the community and one who has provided opportunities for recognition of women and minorities.
Winners of the awards will be announced during a program at 6 p.m. on March 24 at the Hopkinsville Community College auditorium. Featured speaker will be Hopkinsville High School Principal Demetria Choice. Admission is free.
A breakfast will be March 19 at New Covenant of Grace Ministries, 524 W. Seventh St. from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Representatives of women’s organizations will be allowed to introduce themselves and briefly describe their work. Cost of the breakfast is $8.  may be purchased by calling 887-4010 by March 15.
