Grandparents Raising Grandchildren – Grandparents can learn to face the challenges of raising a second generation and find the support they need. The event will be held at 4pm on Thursday, August 27 at Challenge House #1 located at 1001 Central Avenue. The next School Board meeting will be held at 6pm on Thursday, August 27 at the Central Office located at 200 Glass Avenue.
The Christian County Education Coalition, in partnership with Christian County Public Schools, invites the community to support our schools by participating in the School Volunteer Challenge Thursday, September 3 from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Memorial Building in downtown Hopkinsville. Last year’s telethon-style event resulted in nearly 9,000 volunteer hours pledged for our schools. Mark your calendar and make plans to attend this year’s Challenge to pledge your volunteer hours for our schools. A background check is required for all volunteers. Any school volunteers who wish to get a jump start on the background check process are encouraged to call the school at which they wish to volunteer to complete the appropriate paperwork. Questions? Hopkinsville Community College is hosting a grand re-opening for the college's Learning Resource Center (Library). The event is set for Tuesday, September 22, from 3:30 - 5:30 pm. An educational opportunity for all school-aged children will be announced at the event.
Christian County Public Schools will release annual assessment data on Wednesday, September 23. Be sure to visit www.christian.kyschools.us for more information on how our students performed on these important exams.
The 18th Annual Community Reader Day is planned for Friday, November 6. Community Reader Day affords volunteers the opportunity to do their part to help break the cycle of illiteracy by reading to elementary school students and reinforcing the importance of reading. More details on how to sign up to read will available in the coming weeks.
If you know high school sophomores who will have completed Geometry, Algebra I, and Algebra II by the end of their sophomore year, The Carol Martin Gatton Academy for Mathematics and Science in Kentucky may be for them. To learn more, attend the Hopkinsville Gatton Academy information session at 6pm on Tuesday, October 27 at the Pennyrile Electric Building Community Room located at 2000 Harrison Street. · Christian County Public Schools is pleased to welcome four guest foreign language teachers for the 2009-2010 school year. The teachers, who arrived in late July, have spent their first few weeks in Christian County observing other teachers and writing curriculum for the classes they will be teaching starting on September 8. Their arrival was made possible through a grant from The College Board. The guest teachers are:
Alfonso de Torres, teaching Spanish at Martin Luther King, Jr. & Holiday Elementary Schools
Yaofen Wang, teaching Chinese at South Christian Elementary School
Hong Zhang, teaching Chinese at Millbrooke Elementary School
Xiuling Zhou, teaching Chinese at Christian County Middle School
· Fourteen Christian County Public School employees selected for the first-ever Leadership Cohort training program kicked off this unique leadership development program earlier this month at Murray State University's Hopkinsville campus. The participants were selected based on leadership skills as well as a written assessment and oral interview. Over the course of five semesters, participants will complete 30 hours of coursework to earn a master's or Rank 1 degree in school administration and certification for principalship and instructional supervision. A unique requirement of the program is all enrollees are paired with a successful principal for mentoring. The CCPS enrollees are: Ryan Amerson, HHS; Maria Bailey, CCHS; Lori Dexter, CCHS; Chris Gilkey, HHS; Tiffany Gray, SC; Anita Hopson, Belmont; Nathan Howton, NDMS; Arnelle Lynch, Indian Hills; Jessica Meriwether, Pembroke; Shane Pickerill, Millbrooke; John Reynolds, CCMS; Kimberly Stevenson, HHS; Leigh Ann Stewart, NDMS; and Lindsey Childers, Indian Hills.
· The Coalition extends warm congratulations to Christian County Public School juniors and seniors on improvements to their ACT test scores.
