Halloween Safety Tips
Chief Pace and the Hopkinsville Fire Department would like to would like to remind all citizens of a few safety precautions concerning Halloween.
Tips for Children

Go only to homes where the lights are on.

Never trick-or-treat alone. Go with at least two friends.

Stay in familiar neighborhoods.

Use adult supervision for young children

Walk, don't run, from house to house to avoid tripping hazards.

Look in all directions before crossing the street.

Walk on sidewalks, not in the street.

Don't cut across yards or driveways.

Carry a flashlight to help see and be seen.
-
Use reflective tape on candy bags to be better seen by motorists.

Don't wear masks when walking from house to house so you can see properly.

Don't pet animals you don't know.
Tips for Adults

Avoid all unnecessary travel on Halloween evening. If you must drive, drive slowly and watch for small children.

Older children should know where to reach you and when to be home.

Remove anything that could be an obstacle from lawns, steps and porches when expecting trick-or-treaters.

Keep pumpkins with lit candles away from doorsteps where costumes can catch fire.

Keep indoor jack-o'-lanterns away from curtains or things that could catch fire.

Plan and discuss the route trick-or-treaters intend to follow.

Inspect candy before it is eaten. When in doubt, throw it out.
