Crime Stoppers Crime of the Week
Police search for suspect in anhydrous ammonia leak.
The Hopkinsville-Christian County Crime Stoppers needs help
finding the person responsible for causing an anhydrous ammonia leak at
Agri-Chem located just South of Herndon on LaFayette Road in the Crime
of the Week program.
According to police, at 5:30 a.m. on Oct. 29, someone gained access to
Agri-Chem’s anhydrous ammonia tanks by cutting the surrounding chain
link fence. The suspect then broke the valve to the 1,200 pound tank,
which caused hundreds of pounds of ammonia to escape from the tank.
Sheriff deputies found clothing in the area covered in ammonia,
including an extra large blue work jacket, a blue plaid button up
shirt, size 36-38 blue jeans and a pair of size 9 ½ men’s tennis shoes.
Officials believe that the suspect suffered a severe chemical burn and
may have chemical pneumonia.
