The Diversity Conference
For the first time, Christian County will be host to The Diversity Conference on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Hopkinsville Community College from 1 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. This year’s event is themed Bridging the Gap to Community Values, Growth & Inclusion. The conference is free. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided along with conference materials. Additionally, continuing education credits for various professional fields will be offered.
The conference is an opportunity for the community to come together and hear stories of triumph and challenges faced by all. Carmen Carter, host of the Inside Diversity Series and founder of the Multicultural Women’s Council ™, will be the keynote speaker. Nationally known comedian Vince Morris will kick the event off and serve as moderator and breakout session presenter. The band Appalatin will provide musical entertainment featuring their unique Latin and Appalachian fusion sound. There will be breakout sessions exploring ways to capitalize on our area’s diversity, navigate various communication styles, strengthen our workforce through workplace diversity as well as opportunities to hear about common stereotypes, immigration, and the real-life stories of cultural struggles faced by local self-advocates.
“When you live in a community as diverse as Christian County, it’s doing the community a disservice by not looking at and celebrating the rich diversity we have here,” Jeremy Stevenson, VP Community Relations for Christian County CARES said. “We have so many cultures, races and nationalities in Christian County it’s amazing.”
