Recycling Q&A
Why Should I Recycle?
The following are just some of the ways that you can improve your community and the environment when you recycle:
- Save natural resources
- Save landfill space
- Reduce pollution
- Save energy
- Save money
- Create employment
Recycling is a voluntary activity practiced by many residents and businesses which prevents millions of tons of waste from ending up in landfills. Today, recycling is easier than ever due to manufacturers providing easily identifiable recycling symbols on their products.
Who Should Recycle?
EVERYONE should recycle. The Hopkinsville-Christian County Recycling Program offers a multi-faceted prgram in which the opportunity to recycle is made available to ALL residents, businesses, industry, and schools within Christian County.

How Do I Start Recycling?
Residents
Residents who wish to begin recycling simply need to separate the items in their waste stream that they wish to recycle from their household garbage. Residents should make sure that items are given a quick rinse before placement in the container at the drop-off facility to maintain a clean and safe drop-off facility. It is desired that the items are placed in the containers in LOOSE form to help speed the sorting/baling process at the Recycling Center.
Businesses
Businesses that wish to begin recycling may contact the Recycling Coordinator. The Recycling Coordinator will conduct a waste stream assessment and further advise and assist in establishing a business recycling program.
Industries
Industries that wish to begin recycling may contact the Recycling Coordinator. The Recycling Coordinator will conduct a waste stream assessment and further advise and assist in establishing a industry recycling program.
Schools
Schools that wish to begin recycling may contact the Recycling Coordinator. The Recycling Coordinator will conduct a waste stream assessment and further advise and assist in establishing a school recycling program.
Do I Have To Separate Recyclable Items?
It is not necessary to separate your recyclables for transport to the drop-off-facility. However, items should be placed in container in LOOSE form. Separation of items at the drop-off facility is made easy by providing separated containers. Please do not place plastic bags in the drop-off facility containers as the Hopkinsville-Christian County Recycling Program does not currently have the means to recycle these items. A REUSABLE cloth bag is recommended for transporting items to the drop-off location.
Do I Have to Rinse Out My Recyclables?
Please remove all lids & give the item a quick rinse. NO food or liquid should be present in the container at the time of drop-off. Rinsing items will help keep the drop-off facility clean. It will also prevent bugs, odors, and sticky residue that will contaminate materials in our recycling bins.
Where Are Drop-Off Facilities Located?
Drop-off facilities may be found at the following locations:
- Crofton Public Works Building
- Hopkinsville Public Works Building
- Christian County Road Department (available during business hours)
